Big Island energy expert Barry T. Mizuno has been nurturing the development and expansion of geothermal power on Hawaii Island for more than 14 years. Before forming his own energy management consulting business, he served as PGV’s Owner’s Representative. Under his experienced guidance, the facility has become a state-of-the-art power generation plant, producing 20 percent of the electricity needs of Hawaii Island residents and by far the most renewable energy.

Mizuno, a Kauai native, joined Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) as financial manager in December 1992, just prior to PGV’s start-up in April 1993. He was appointed Owner’s Representative in September 1999.

Mizuno is a well-respected member of the Big Island business community, a reputation that extends across the state. He is well versed in energy issues from all perspectives–government, public utilities and the private sector. A certified public accountant, he previously served as managing director of the County of Hawaii and as finance director for two years. His professional career spans public accounting, public utilities, sugar industry, insurance and travel.

Mizuno graduated from Waimea High School on Kauai and Central Washington University. He is active at his church and in the community, being a member of various business and community organizations, such as the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce, Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Hawaii, Hawaii Island United Way Finance Committee, and Hawaii Island Economic Development Board.

He previously chaired of the County Salary Commission and was a member of the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority and the High Technology Development Corp. He is also on the Board of W. H. Shipman, Limited.

Mizuno retired from fulltime PGV employment at the end of 2006 but remains active as Ormat’s local consultant. He is married and has two grown children.
