Hawai‘i is alternative energy incubator

Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) was part of three energy summits on three islands last month.

Nearly 1,000 renewable energy experts converged on O‘ahu for the inaugural Asia-Pacific Clean Energy Summit and Expo. The four-day event drew international experts and policymakers from China, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and The Philippines in addition to the U.S.

PGV plant manager Michael Kaleikini was part of a session on geothermal energy with two other panelists. Dr. Frank Miao of WorleyParsons, a global energy technologies supplier, intrigued attendees with a report on integrated solar and geothermal technologies. David West represented another geothermal developer that targets lower temperature geothermal resources.

Puna Geotherma Venture was a sponsor for the second year of the Maui Clean Energy Summit and Expo. Summit participants discussed creating a favorable environment for investing in new (for Maui) renewable technologies such as ocean, geothermal and other systems.

On the Big Island, PGV was part of the University of Hawaii-Hilo’s Sustainability Fair.

As The Wall Street Journal noted—Hawai‘i, “a state better known for sun and fun, is quietly morphing into one of the world’s leading incubators of alternative energy.”

So hot, it’s cool.
