PGV, island businesses, celebrate Earth Day on O‘ahu

The theme for this year’s Earth Day (April 22), celebrated by millions worldwide, was “the green generation”—renewable energy, sustainability, green economy and green jobs.

Puna Geothermal Venture joined the Green Market festivities on O‘ahu, spreading the word about geothermal technology to more folks on our most-populated island. Other Big Island businesses were there too.

Honolulu Weekly hosted the tabloid’s first-ever Green Market on Fort Street Mall, held in conjunction with publication of its annual Sustainability Guide.

Downtown professionals, students, and people just interested in making their lives greener were there, taking in everything from solar-powered cell phones to computer recycling to a bicycle that generates electricity. Blue Planet Foundation, Inter-Island Solar Supply and Whole Foods Market were the principal sponsors.

Geothermal power gets high marks all around for sustainability: it uses no fossil fuels in production, emits no greenhouse gases, and records near-zero emissions from the plant.

For more than 15 years, Puna Geothermal Venture has provided a continuous flow of electricity for Big Island homes and businesses, replacing thousands of barrels of imported oil every year.

“Geothermal is Hawai‘i’s oil,” says Michael Kakeikini, PGV’s plant manager, “to be used—wisely.”
