Big Island community well represented at “green” event

For the second year, Big Island companies were well represented at the popular garden gala, Who’s Keeping Hawai‘i Green. Nearly 400 people attended the O‘ahu event honoring local businesses, individuals and organizations statewide who have taken steps to be “green.”

Who’s Keeping Hawai‘i Green awardees included the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA), which has a research facility on Hawai‘i Island, and Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu. Kona Brewing Company’s Mattson Davis gave the keynote and shared the story of Kona Brewing Company’s journey along the pathway to sustainability.

Maurice Kaye, recently retired Hawai‘i Energy Program Administrator, received a surprise lifetime achievement award. The annual event was sponsored by PacificBasin Communication and its partners to raise awareness and encourage people to embrace environmental practices where they live, work and play.

Puna Geothermal Venture was a sponsor for the second year.

A portion of the event’s proceeds benefited Hawai‘i singer/songwriter Jack Johnson’s Kokua Hawai‘i Foundation supporting environmental education in schools and communities throughout Hawai‘i.
