Ted Turner, members of the Turner Foundation and of his immediate family toured Puna Geothermal Venture and heard about geothermal power and its potential. Paul Thomsen of Ormat Technologies headquarters in Reno, NV was on hand to give the company overview and Mike Kaleikini, PGV plant manager, outlined the local operations and led the group on a tour of the facility.

Lt. Governor visits PGV
Lt. Gov. James R. “Duke” Aiona, Jr. stopped at the PGV site and discussed the important role geothermal energy plays in Hawaii’s alternate energy picture. He met with Mike Kaleikini, PGV plant manager, and Paul Thomsen, public policy manager of Ormat Technologies, Inc., of which PGV is an affiliate.

Congressional visit

A delegation of senior staff members from the U.S. Senate visited the plant in April 2007. The delegation discussed Hawaii’s energy challenges and Puna Geothermal Venture’s efforts to reduce dependency on imported petroleum.

Puna Geothermal Venture continued to produce power following the October 2006 6.7 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Hawaii Island. Geothermal energy greatly reduces the county’s dependence on fossil fuels. It provides jobs and has proven to be a good neighbor, through community service projects, sponsorships and scholarships, and keeping the community and others aware of its activities.
