What did the experimental well accomplish?
The project revealed that geothermal resources on Hawaii Island are robust, reliable and sustainable. It also showed that the byproducts—excess fluids and gas—needed to be better handled and disposed. Some of the techniques developed and tested at this site were used in the development of PGV’s commercial plant. Regulatory agencies put standards in place to mitigate some of the issues that were uncovered during the experimental geothermal development in the area.
